A preacher stood beneath a dying tree,
Its roots were old, its fruit was free.
He warned the crowd: “Don’t take too much,”
But greed don’t pause for sermons and such.
One plucked for hunger, one for pride,
Both claimed need, both justified.
But neither sowed, nor tilled the land—
They only reached with open hand.
The tree grew weak, the fruit turned black,
The preacher wept, “It won’t grow back.”
But by then, all had turned away,
Blaming drought, or God, or yesterday.
They cursed the soil, they cursed the sky,
Never once asked *who* let it die.
For when the fruit is always free,
The axe comes swift for every tree.
